Pages people actually get to the end of.

Design is not decoration laid over the content. It is the reason somebody keeps reading long enough to do the thing you wanted them to do, and the reason most of them stop.

What design and UX mean.

Design is what a page looks like: the type, the colour, the pictures, the order things appear in. UX, user experience, is what it is like to use. How obvious the next step is, how many taps it takes, how much you have to read before you find the one thing you came for.

They fail differently and both failures cost the same. An ugly page can still work. A beautiful page where the phone number is below three screens of scrolling does not, and nobody complains about it. They just leave, and you never find out they were there.

Almost nobody decides not to enquire. They just fail to get around to it.What UX is really about

So the work is mostly subtraction: removing the steps between somebody wanting to contact you and managing it. There are almost always more of them than anyone expects.

Landing pages, full sites and everything in between.

Website design

Laid out around what a visitor is trying to find, rather than around what the business most wants to say first. Those are rarely the same thing.

Landing pages

One page, one decision, built for where advertising sends people. This is where most ad budgets are quietly won or lost, and it is the cheapest thing on this page to fix.

User experience review

Going through your existing site as a stranger with a phone and no patience, and writing down every place they would give up. Often it is three things and none of them are the design.

A brand that holds together

Type, colour and mark that stay the same across the site, the emails and everything else. Inconsistency does not read as variety, it reads as carelessness.

Who this is for.

  • People paying for traffic that does not convert The ads are working and the enquiries are not coming. Nine times in ten the problem is after the click, not before it.
  • A site that looks fine and performs badly Nothing is visibly broken, which is why it never gets fixed. The damage is entirely invisible from the inside.
  • Anyone about to spend real money on a rebuild Deciding what the pages should do is much cheaper before somebody starts building them. An afternoon here saves weeks later.
Who it is not for. If almost nobody reaches your pages in the first place, design is not your first problem. Getting found is. I will say so, and that conversation costs nothing.

Why me.

  • I watch what happens after the design I run advertising into these pages, so I find out within a fortnight whether a layout works. Most designers never get told.
  • Drawn flat before anything is styled Plain shapes first, while changing your mind is free. Choosing colours before deciding what a page is for is how sites end up beautiful and useless.
  • Phone first, and genuinely Most of your visitors are on a phone, standing up, half distracted. Designing on a large screen and shrinking it afterwards is why so many sites feel like a form filled in on a train.
  • You get the files The designs are yours. If somebody else builds it, or rebuilds it in three years, they start from what you paid for.
  1. DiscoveryWeek 1

Who this is for, what you want them to do, and what is stopping them now. Short, and it decides everything after it.

  2. StructureWeek 1–2

Every page laid out flat in plain boxes: what goes where and in what order. Ugly on purpose, so we are arguing about the order and not the colour.

  3. DesignWeek 2–4

The real thing: type, colour, photography, the whole page on a phone and on a desktop. Two rounds of changes are normal and already accounted for.

  4. Handover or buildWeek 4–5

Files to whoever is building it, or straight into the build if that is me.

Four cards: week 1 discovery, weeks 1 to 2 structure, weeks 2 to 4 design, weeks 4 to 5 handover or build
The same four stages, on a calendar
A single landing page is about two weeks. Much smaller job, same order. It is usually the fastest way to find out whether the problem was ever the design.
These are one person’s timelines, not an agency’s. Advertising moves faster here because there is nobody to hand it to and no queue to join. A website takes longer, for exactly the same reason. Both are written as what actually happens rather than what sounds impressive, and if something is going to run late you will hear it from me first.

Quoted as one fixed number, before anything starts.

You get a written price for the whole job after the first conversation, and that is the price. Not an hourly rate that becomes a surprise, and not a quote that grows every time something turns out to be harder than it looked. If I have misjudged the work, that is mine to wear, not yours.

Project work
From $1,500

That is a small site, done properly. A handful of pages, quick on a phone, and set up to record where its enquiries came from. More pages, or anything that has to take a booking or hold a waitlist, costs more, and you get that number before you agree to anything, not halfway through.

  • One fixed number, written down before I start
  • Half to begin, half at launch
  • Your domain and hosting, in your name, not marked up
  • Thirty days of fixes after launch, included

If the scope genuinely changes because you want something that was never discussed, I price that separately and you approve it before I build it.

A full site design depends on how many genuinely different pages there are, not on how many pages exist. Forty pages built from four layouts is four pages of work, and I price it that way.

The prices are on the table. The call is for whether the work fits what you need.

How much does design cost?

Projects start at $1,500, which is where a single landing page usually lands. A full site design is priced on how many genuinely different layouts it needs rather than how many pages exist.

Where I am building the site as well, the design is part of that one fixed number rather than a separate invoice.

What is the difference between design and development?

Design decides what the page looks like and what goes where. Development builds it so it actually exists, loads fast and works on a phone.

I do both, which mostly means the handover problem disappears: nothing gets designed that cannot be built, and nothing gets built that quietly drops half the design.

Do I need a whole new site, or just a landing page?

If you are running ads and they are not producing enquiries, start with one landing page. It is a fraction of the cost and it answers the question. If a purpose-built page converts and the site does not, you have learned something worth knowing before spending real money.

Do you write the words as well?

Yes, and I would rather. Design and copy are the same decision made twice: what does somebody need to know, in what order, before they will act.

If you already have words you are happy with, I will lay the page out around them and tell you honestly where I think they are getting in the way.

Can you work with the site I already have?

Usually. A lot of sites need a layout fixed rather than replaced, and that is normally a much smaller job than anyone expects.

Where it is genuinely not worth saving I will say so and explain why, rather than charging you to reorganise something that is going to be thrown away next year.

What do I actually get at the end?

The designs themselves, as files you own, plus the layouts for a phone and for a desktop, and a written note of what each page is for and why it is in that order.

That last part matters more than it sounds. It is what stops the site drifting back into a list of everything the business wants to say.
